That might mean calling out specific apps you live by or talking about your color coding system for prioritizing to-do items in your planner. List the organization’s corporate location when using a city/state format, but note that the work is performed remotely in the first sentence or bullet point. Save time and find higher-quality jobs than on other sites, guaranteed. You might think company culture is unimportant—or perhaps even nonexistent—when you and your colleagues work across the country (or even world!) from each other. We want candidates who are positive, really motivated, self-managed, able to work with minimal supervision, and show passion about WordPress and what they do. We look for creative team players who are willing to bring new ideas to our company. To find a great cultural fit we expect to onboard people who are aligned with our core values, which are quality, excellent support, open-mindedness and creativity, a positive attitude, and honesty. Some people work best with lots of structure and external pressure, but working well autonomously is a big part of our culture at GitHub. We need people to be self-motivated enough to stay productive without someone looking over their shoulder and checking up on them all the time. We lean towards candidates who emphasize their fit for the responsibilities of the position, rather than how working remotely would benefit them.

I need someone who thrives with change, and can operate with unknowns. “The employer wants to know whether you can recover if things break down,” Leech says. Disagreements are inevitable, so knowing how to navigate and defuse misunderstandings before they get out of hand is an incredibly important skill—especially when you’re part of a remote team. “Managers can’t peek over your desk to see if you’re lost or idle, so it becomes significantly more important that you raise concerns if you’re stuck or otherwise need assistance,” Leech says. Asking questions throughout your interview process, following up with a thank you note after every call, and preparing for every interview in advance are all great ways to demonstrate your proactive nature. Being a self-starter, an excellent communicator, or an outstanding manager of time are all great qualities to present for an array of jobs.
